In the tarot deck there is a belief that the major arcana was designed around the tree of life and the 22 major arcana or trump cards, 0-21, represents the 22 paths on the tree of life. The pip cards are thought to have came later, and that the pip cards of the tarot deck is from where the regular playing cards evolved. The suit of the playing cards are missing one card each, the knave or page card. When we started using the playing cards for game, sport or chance the knaves/page cards got weeded out. Honestly I think most or any evidence of this theory isn't supported and is mainly conjuncture but it seems to have logical sense.

It was these minor cards 1 through 10 that represented fundamental daily life energies, situations or conflicts, then the knaves or pages through king represented people or significant relationships. The major arcana represents life lessons that can't be avoided, lessons you put into play long before and must be at this point played out.
