BERKANA: Birth
Keywords:
Birch Goddess, growth, transformation, transitions, birth, fertility, liberation, regenerative power, spring, resurrection, renewal, new beginnings, new growth. Arousal of desire. A new love affair, or new birth. The prospering of an enterprise or venture.
Meaning:
This the rune of GROWTH. Take a breath because drawing this rune means you are on the road to happy destiny. Winter has passed and spring has sprung. However there is a down side. This can also be where the past and the future collide. Honor what has passed and allow ti to die. No longer hold onto what doesn't work. Holding on will only cause pain. Embrace the new that is upon you and follow your heart.
If this relates to a relationship, be prepared to relate to each other in a new way. Honor the new people you have become and allow yourselves time to adjust to the new way of relating to each other. The new leaves of the birch tree have no record of last season. Neither should you.
This can be a radical time of mental, physical, emotional and spiritual growth, transition, and even TRANSFORMATION.
Merkstaff:
Stagnation, deceit, sterility, family problems, domestic troubles, anxiety about someone close to you, callousness, Refusing to focus on the positive.
Gods & Goddess’s it relates too:
Goddess Idun is associated with the sacred birch tree (Berkana) and spring fertility rites. The birch has such green leaves that many believe that the birch is the living embodiment of Idun. She is spring, youth, and new beginnings. She is also the keeper of apples which bring eternal youth to the Gods.
plant / mineral: Elder / Jet
Meditation:
Allow yourself to relax into a meditative state while hold your focus on Idun.
Now visualize a tree branch stretching out before you and allow it to form. Take notice of the shape and direction. Now allow it to bud, bringing forth new leaves. As the leaves unfold you will notice there may be writing on them, or pictures, or actual objects inside each leaf. Each leaf contains a message of what is budding and unfolding into your new life.
What's the new growth in your life bringing you?
If you need help ask Idun to assist you in bringing forth this new life.
